Restaurant Chez Ping (Shifu) LaSalle is a straightforward Chinese restaurant tucked into a plaza on Newman Blvd in Lasalle. Locals looking for traditional Cantonese flavors and dim sum will find plenty to explore here. The dining setup leans toward takeout and casual visits rather than elaborate sit-down meals, with tables spaced out comfortably though part of the interior may be sectioned off at times, reflecting a relaxed, no-fuss atmosphere.

The menu covers a broad range of classic Chinese dishes with some highlights like scallop and shrimp dumplings, steamed cuttlefish, and notable seafood-centric plates such as Big Lobster with Ginger and Scallion or Garlic Scallops with Vermicelli. For dim sum lovers, options like pork ribs or baby squid dim sum add a different texture to the usual spread, while combos provide approachable group meals without complexity. Soups like hot and sour and preservation of regional flavors like the star anise broth steamed fish hint at a kitchen mindful of authentic taste.

This spot caters well to those who want a quick but satisfying meal — either a standalone dinner or a modest group share. It’s also practical for office workers or families on the go, considering the steady takeout flow and no-pressure dining experience. The staff come across as courteous and helpful, adding a layer of comfort for first-timers or those ordering dim sum delicacies which might feel unfamiliar to some.

Because Chez Ping leans more practical than trendy, the best time to visit might be early evenings or weekend afternoons when dim sum cravings hit, especially if you’re after steamed bite-sized dishes and soupy starters rather than a drawn-out dinner. It’s a no-frills setting fit for anyone craving straightforward, reasonably priced Chinese food without the fuss of fine dining.

  • Ideal for dim sum fans and those who appreciate seafood-forward Chinese dishes
  • Casual ambiance with spaced-out seating, more takeout-friendly than formal dining
  • Good for quick, satisfying meals or sharing combos among small groups
  • Accessible location in LaSalle, with friendly staff to navigate the menu

So we were not really hungry for dinner. Looking for a dim sum place near verdun and Ping was the one that jumped out. Great venue. Nicely spaced tables. Very courteous and helpful staff. We ordered some dim sums, soups, and a big plate of crispy calamari for 3 persons. Total with tips about $43. No drinks. I will come back to try other plates. Try the baby squid dim sums!

We are in town on business and we drive by this plaza daily on our way home and see the giant lit up PING sign ... We decided to stop in the other night to get some food as we haven't had Chinese food in a while ... When we arrive and go in we realize that the restaurant is actually closed inside and blocked off by tables just inside the doorway, and it is takeout only, going by an alternative name SHIFU (on Uber, Dash, Skip, and many others probably based on the amount of Tablets that are sitting on the counter) ... We decided to do takeout and go back to the hotel and eat ... We ordered probably entirely way too much food, but it all sounded great ... For a takeout only place the 6 menus casually thrown down on the tables blocking the restaurant seemed more faded/dirty than you would expect ... The one staff member that we dealt with was super helpful and explained a few dishes we asked about and even made suggestions in between pulling Uber orders for drivers coming in ... The food was ultimately very good, and the suggestions were appreciated Overall, I would go back and try some other menus items next time I'm in town ...

I ordered general tao chicken and bao from restaurant named shifu on skip the dish and I know it's actually from here. Food was very delicious. General tao chicken was crispy and sweet. Bao was really juicy and its texture was amazing. Pricing is average not too expensive.
